Androgyny fashion is an essential fashion movement that has been on the raise for a few years now. I feel it is necessary and beyond imperative that androgyny is seen, respected, and taken seriously within the fashion industry. You know, you see the forward thinking design houses explore it, but to push the envelope to that of a full unisex or androgyny line has yet to be seen. I think that is where fashion is headed however. I mean it is only natural and organic. Gender itself can be quite fluid. This is why in part; I believe clothing shouldn’t be gender confined. Like what’s the point of regulating who wears what, what’s feminine and what’s not, why does an apparel aesthetic represent how society should view me? Fashion is self- expression, it is our identity and how we choose to visually present the way we imagine ourselves to the world is authentic and unique to each individual. Growing up as a masculine centered woman, you come across so many hardships shopping. The separation of gender specific clothing makes people who don’t fit into a specific box feel uneasy. A masculine centered woman may feel uncomfortable shopping in the “men’s” department for the very clothing that makes her feel comfortable. She may also be rejected and turned away by sales associates that insist she checkout the “women’s” department or try on her items there. This can be quite traumatic for Queer youth that are still developing that image of themselves and discovering who they are.

I think love and understanding within the Queer community is paramount because we deal with so much in society. The ideals of societal norms, social gender constructions, male and cis misogyny, and just pure ignorance, are the very reasons behind misconceptions with beauty and gender labeled clothing. I do contend tearing down the gender structures within fashion would help eliminate these issues. These issues that I endured alongside those like me has inspired me to create a fashion line for us, women of masculinity, Trans, gays, and non binaries, where one could shop in comfort without the awkward stares or judgments. VAINGALORE is a line that is targeted to both femininity and masculinity but nongender binary, unisex. To me, this is androgyny, the gender fluidity between masculinity and femininity that embodies all of us but embraced by few. This is the future of fashion. As long as the representation remains organic and authentic, I envision androgyny wear here to stay.
